Cycling Route - Angelokastro
Total Distance: 25km Effort Rating: CHALLENGING
The Byzantine Castle of Angelokastro...
The view over Palaiokastritsa is a 'must see' from the castle at Angelokastro. Ride from Arillas to Pagi, Makrades (for lunch), Krini and Angelokastro with views over Paleokastritsa. Detour to Afionas on the way back and down to Arillas on the coastal track.
For many centuries Angelokastro was an important strategic fortification to protect Corfu. The fortification commands a view of almost the entire southern Adriatic. It was probably first occupied in the early Byzantine period (5th-7th Centuries). The castle enjoyed considerable prominence during the period of Venetian rule (1386-1797) but later it fell into disuse and during the 19th Century it was in a totally abandoned state. Since the end of the twentieth century the castle has been under renovation, and in 2009 was fully opened. The result is well worth the climb to see both the renovated castle and the views it commands.
The view over Paleokastritsa from the castle is one of the most beautiful views you could wish for and certainly makes the effort of getting there worthwhile.
The Route
From Arillas, head out over the hill to Agios Georgios and along the beach road and upwards through Pagi and Prinilas to Vistonas. Turn right in Vistonas to Makrades where you should stop for a well deserved lunch at one of the excellent taverna's in the main street. From Makrades, head to Krini and stay on the road to the base of the cliff supporting Angelokastro. At the base of the castle there is a lovely taverna with wonderful views. You will need to leave your bicycle in the car park and take the steep steps up to the castle entrance. Explore the castle and take in the stunning views over Paliokastrisa.
