Navigating your ride around Corfu
Navigating while cycling in Corfu is not particularly difficult, as most of the road signs are in both Greek and English. Once you get off the beaten track, road signage can be a bit hit-or-miss. Signs can often just point to Kerkyra (Corfu Town), sometimes in both directions at a junction. It would be an unwise cyclist who set off for a ride through the Corfu countryside without at least a basic map.
While we always carry a paper map, we also use a bike mounted GPS unit to record and plot routes such as those in the Cycle Tours section of the website.
Maps...
Virtually all tourist shops and supermarkets will sell a variety of Corfu maps. These maps can be of variable quality and accuracy and you will need to assess them against your needs. A particularly good map for cyclists is the 1:50,000 produced by freytag & berndt which gives a very good coverage of the road system on the island.
Many of the maps you can buy are designed for the hire car driver and do not include some of the more interesting lanes and tracks that make cycling in Corfu so much fun.
GPS...
GPS background maps of Europe contain detailed mapping over the whole of Corfu. Unfortunately, from our experience these maps are far too detailed and show roads and lanes that no longer exist. Click on this image to see the difference between the GPS map and a good paper map for the same area.
We recommend that if you want to navigate by GPS in Corfu, you first plot your route into the GPS unit in conjunction with a good Corfu map.
All of our cycle tour routes are available as *.tcx files in a zipped file that you can download and use to follow the routes we cycled from Arillas.
Please contact us if you want further information on routes and navigation while cycling in Corfu. We are regularly conducting cycling trips and finding new and exciting routes to follow. We hope to soon have a full portfolio of detailed routes around the northern half of the island
