The roads in Corfu vary in quality and while you will see cyclists training on road bikes in and around Corfu Town, you are unlikely to see them further afield. You can choose a range of bikes for cycling in Corfdu, but by far the most common are a range of low-end mountain bikes. These can be seen all over the island and are the most common bike for hire in bike hire shops.



If you bring your own touring bike, some good tyres are a must if you want to venture down some of the smaller side roads and tracks. The roads have good surfaces but can be broken and pot-holed along the edges, so make sure your tyres and wheels are sturdy.



Our recommendation for bikes to use while cycling in Corfu are mountain bikes or hybrids. The 'Ideal' range of bikes found for hire in Corfu, although basic, do everything asked of them and maintenance is relatively easy. They are cheap to hire and perfectly serviceable machines to travel the roads and lanes of Corfu. We have done all of our Corfu cycling using these bikes and, surprisingly, don't have many bad words to say about them. They have got me to the top of Pantokrator several times.



If you want something better than the basic hire bikes, there are some hire shops which stock higher-end bikes from the likes of Giant etc. The hire prices do reflect the quality however.



​Taking your own bike...
Having seen the state of some bikes that come out of the holds of the planes into Corfu, we cannot recommend that you bring your own bike. If you really want to do so, you must make sure that the bike is very well protected, in a hard case by preference.

You will need to contact your airline to see what their policy is with regard to bikes and how much the excess baggage charge will be for carrying it. The airlines won't allow you to take it as hand luggage :o)
