Some Do's and Don'ts to make your riding more enjoyable:
Do take plenty of water. There are areas with few villages and tavernas to restock, so take MORE than you think you’ll need. We made this mistake one hot day and its no joke.
Do always wear a hat. You don’t want to get sunstroke! (It is up to individual preference whether you wear a cycle helmet, but we'd recommend it)
Do take some extra clothing. While everyone is sunbathing on the beach, it can get surprisingly cold on the hill tops. Pantokrator can be freezing!!!
Don’t ride in a big bunch. The Corfiot Greeks are very courteous to cyclists but are not yet fully used to us (they think we’re mad!).
Do always wear sunscreen and cycling glasses/sunglasses. The air is very clear on the hilltops and you don’t want to burn.
Don’t (and this is a BIG don’t) cycle at break-neck speed downhill through small villages. The inhabitants (people, dogs, chickens, cats, goats etc.) won’t be expecting bikes at speed and you could end up having a terrible accident!!!
Do always take a puncture repair kit, spare tube, pump and basic tool kit. It can be a long walk to find a workshop or telephone.
Don’t take on big rides in the full heat of the summer. Between mid June and September the temperature and humidity can be high, limit yourself to shorter rides.
Do take a camera. You don’t want to go to all that effort with no way of recording it.
Don’t go off obvious routes and tracks.
Do wear appropriate cycling clothing as it’s functional, comfortable and gives the local’s a good laugh.
Do always cycle on the RIGHT hand side of the road.
Do bring your own pedals and cycling shoes if hiring bikes (don't forget a pedal spanner).
Do take your mobile phone. It probably won’t work when you want it, but at least you’ll feel like you’re in touch.
